Horizon Heroes: Courage and Community

September marked Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and our Horizon community came together in extraordinary ways to show love, support, and generostiy to children and families navigating a pediatric cancer diagnosis. Demonstrating remarkable leadership and empathy, student Arya, one of our own students, who is currently battling cancer himself with a positive outlook, spearheaded a drive to uplift fellow young patients navigating similar challenges. Thanks to his efforts and our community’s overwhelming kindness, we raised $560 for Kinsley’s Unicorn Squad and collected a carload of toys for Keaton’s Child Cancer Alliance to bring joy to young patients in treatment.

That same spirit of profound gratitude is echoed in the words of another Horizon student and childhood cancer survivor, who recently shared her tribute to an unnamed hero across the world: “I would like to tell you about someone who is a hero to me. I do not know this person by name, and I actually have never met him. I know he is a man who lived in Spain in the year 2017. This generous man donated his stem cells and saved my life. I was 4 years old, sitting in a room at UCSF fighting Leukemia… About 6000 miles away in Spain, a man around the age of 30 was contacted by the donor registry… He did not know me, he did not know what I was going through, he only knew that he matched to someone in need. On August 23rd, 2017 I received those cells… This gift made a huge impact on m y life and now I am 9 years cancer free. That is why he is my hero.”

Whether through life-saving stem cell donations from strangers halfway across the globe or the grassroots fundraising and toy collection led by our students, these stories highlight the enduring power of compassion. We are immensely proud of our Horizon families for their selfless service and deep dedication to uplifting one another. Thank you for opening your hearts and continuing to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children fighting cancer.
