At Horizon, students can explore different instructional approaches, also known as Learning Pathways, tailored to their needs. Our programs provide flexibility, support, and opportunities for growth.
On-Demand Learning
On-Demand Learning includes online, Horizon-approved curriculum accessible at any time, pre-recorded lessons, interactive learning experiences, engaging activities, and supplementary offline “home” work managed through one platform. Materials provided include workbooks, grade-level kits, manipulatives, and pacing guides.
What is it?

- Students typically engage in HCS-approved online curriculum and “home” work daily: Grades K-2, 60-90 minutes total for Math and ELA; Grades 3-5, 75-110 minutes total for Math and ELA; Grades 6-8, 90-120 minutes total for Math and ELA.
- Families ensure students complete online and “home” work, help students get organized, monitor engagement and learning, use the HCS-approved resources, and provide additional daily supplemental enrichment activities in Math and ELA.
- HCS teachers provide additional on-demand lessons, supportive instructional opportunities, social interactions, and meet with families to monitor and guide student progress and achievement.

Blended Learning
Blended Learning includes scheduled, live virtual instruction provided by a Horizon Teacher a few days each week. Students have the opportunity to interact, discuss material, and problem solve with their classmates. Horizon provides approved print curriculum and grade-level material, pacing guides, and digital online resources.

Supported Home Study
Family provides daily instruction in Math and/or English Language Arts with the guidance and support of a Supervising Teacher. HCS provides approved workbooks, grade-level material, pacing guides, and/or digital online curriculum.
What is it?
- Students typically engage in daily literacy and math activities in HCS approved curriculum and complete assigned work: Grades K-2, 60-90 minutes total for Math and ELA; Grades 3-5, 75-110 minutes total for Math and ELA; Grades 6-8, 90-120 total minutes for Math and ELA
- Families use the HCS recommended curriculum in partnership with their supervising teacher, follow the pacing and teaching guides, ensure students complete work with adequate quality, monitor learning, and provide additional daily activities to support student learning in Math and English Language Arts.
- Teachers provide ongoing assessments, and review and evaluate student work and work samples to provide feedback regarding student progress and proficiency against grade-level standards.
- Teachers provide social interactions, virtual group classes as needed, and meet with families regularly to help families manage their pacing, and discuss instructional strategies, to monitor and to guide student achievement.

Alternative Home Study
Family provides daily instruction in Math and/or English Language Arts with the support of a Supervising Teacher. HCS approved materials are selected in consultation with the family and ordered by the HCS Teacher to align with grade level standards, learner needs, and interests.
What is it?
- Students typically engage in daily literacy and math activities in HCS approved curriculum and complete assigned work: Grades K-2, 60-90 minutes total for Math and ELA; Grades 3-5, 75-110 minutes total for Math and ELA; Grades 6-8, 90-120 minutes total for Math and ELA
- Teachers work with families to develop the pacing and a personalized learning plan.
- Teachers provide ongoing assessments, and review and evaluate student work and samples to provide feedback regarding student progress, pacing, and proficiency against grade level standards.
- Teachers provide opportunities for social interaction, small group lessons as needed, and meet with families regularly to help manage instructional pacing, to monitor progress, and to guide student achievement.
