Winners of HCS Education Foundation’s Third Art Contest Announced
In an effort to promote the arts and let students showcase their artistic flair, each year Horizon Charter Schools Education Foundation (HCSEF) holds a student art contest. Open to all Horizon students in grades TK-12, students use their imaginations and talents to create artwork based around a chosen theme. This year’s themes were:
- Fantasy Creatures
- Dream Landscapes
Entries are divided into grade-level categories: Transitional Kindergarten (TK)-first grade, second-third grades, fourth-sixth grades, seventh-nineth grades, and tenth-twelfth grades.
Guidelines for Art Submissions
Entering the Student Art Contest is simple. All Horizon Charter Schools students are eligible, regardless of whether they participate in homeschooling, independent study or distance learning, or attend Horizon’s Lincoln Montessori school. Each student may only submit one entry, and each entry must follow contest themes.
Art must be original and hand drawn or painted on either poster board, paper or canvas. The artistic medium is up to each artist: oil, watercolor, pastels, acrylic, pencils, markers, or crayons are all accepted. However, students may not enter digital paintings.
After their masterpieces are created, students submit them to the HCSEF. Once all artwork is received, HCSEF’s panel of judges reviews the entries and begins the difficult task of choosing the winners.
Student Art Contest Prizes and Awards
Following the announcement of the Student Art Contest winners, Horizon Charter Schools’ proudly displayes the top four submissions in each category in the halls of District Office in Lincoln. Next time you drop by, be sure to take a look at all past and present winners. You’ll see Horizon has some very talented students!

- First Place: $40 Gift Card
- Second Place: $30 Gift Card
- Third Place: $20 Gift Card
- Honorable Mention: $10 Gift Card
Every contestant also receives a certificate of participation. The Superintendent also chooses a winner who receives a special certificate.

Benefits of a Charter School Education
One of the many benefits to educating children through a free, public charter school such as Horizon Charter Schools is the abundance of extra-curricular activities. While many traditional schools are cutting back on electives, Horizon offers the flexibility to continue to support visual and performing arts, sports, and many other activities that help children learn and grow.
