Guidance Department Organizes Two Valuable Events for Junior High and High School Students and Families
Did you know America is facing a shortage of career-ready college graduates? To meet economic demand, the United States needs 11 million more skilled workers by 2025 than we can currently produce. Current junior high and high school students need to start preparing now so they are ready to help fill this gap in skilled workers.
Horizon’s helpful and knowledgeable Guidance Department has two valuable events in November to inform Horizon students and their families about college options.
- College Readiness Workshop
- UC Davis Tour
College Readiness Workshop
Eighth through twelfth grade students and their parents or guardians should plan to attend one of the upcoming regional College Readiness Workshops.
- Monday, November 4th from 3:30-4:45pm at Sunshine Swim and Event Center in Elk Grove
- Wednesday, November 6th from 3:15-4:30pm at Horizon Charter Schools’ Roseville Learning Center
Workshops will be presented by Horizon’s awesome guidance counselors, Melora Klusnick (in Roseville) and Gabe Robert (in Elk Grove).
Melora has been providing a College Readiness Workshop for Horizon since 2014. According to Melora, “The College Readiness Workshop is important because it gives students and parents the opportunity to get a general overview of the whole college process so they can plan, know what research they need to do, get prepared, and ask more questions.”
The workshop covers readiness for all types of colleges: UC, CSU, out of state universities, private universities, military academies, and community colleges.
- Setting goals and selecting courses
- Grades and GPA
- College entrance exams: PSAT, SAT, and ACT
- Career exploration and choosing a major
- College choice: CSU, UC, out of state, public, private, military academy, or community college
- Financial aid and scholarships
- College application process
Information will also be provided about the new AB 19 “Two Years Free” programs at California community colleges.
Whether students are considering a four-year university or community college, this presentation will provide an excellent overview.
“I love providing this workshop because it’s my passion to help our high school students become prepared for a productive and rewarding life,” added Melora.
Please refer to the College Readiness Workshop flyer on Horizon’s Hub for additional details.
