How many times do you hear that throughout the summer from your kids? Offering up learning activities is rarely met with enthusiasm. Yet, keeping kids actively engaged
in learning throughout the summer is an important part of their educational process. The solution? Come to our May Family Workshops!Kathleen Waffle, Horizon’s amazing Parent Educator, will share an abundance of interactive, indoor and outdoor, fun-packed activities chocked full of learning potential for parents and students alike. Best part? You and your kids will have so much fun, you’ll all forget this is school work (and we promise not to tell).
Here’s a peek at just a few of the awesome activities Kathleen has in store:
- Discover how to make humungous bubbles
- Learn how to plant a terrarium
- Use Matchbox® or Hot Wheels® cars to learn about friction
- Learn beach ball math
- Get kid-friendly recipes to try at home
- Build and test a Lifesaver Peppermint Race Car
- Learn about nutrition with the Lunchtime Bingo Game
- Teach your children road safety and what the different road signs mean with the Safe Drive Survival Game
- And a plethora of other hands-on activities
Best of all, you’ll meet and learn with other Horizon families – because learning is more fun with friends!
The Summer Fun workshop is offered in Rocklin, Elk Grove and Placerville, so you can pick the date and location that works best for your family. Space is limited, so be sure to register right away. Horizon Charter Schools families are required to sign up in advance using the Workshop RSVP form.

Who Can Attend Horizon’s Family Workshops?
As a free service of Horizon, educational workshops are open to all parents and students currently enrolled in Horizon Charter Schools. Horizon’s Summer Fun Workshops are designed for parents with children in kindergarten – 8th grades. Children are welcome and encouraged to attend, however children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Family Workshops Offered as Free Service to Horizon Families
Family workshops include all supplies necessary to do each interactive project. There are no registration or supply fees required to attend. To ensure we have enough supplies for everyone, Horizon Charter Schools families are required to sign up in advance using the Workshop RSVP form.

Horizon’s Family Workshops Taught by Our Experienced Parent Educator
All Horizon family educational workshops are taught by Kathleen Waffle, Horizon’s Parent Educator extraordinaire. Kathleen brings four decades of knowledge to each and every workshop she teaches, having taught workshops for schools across Northern California. She knows all the tips and tricks to help families succeed in their homeschool or independent study journeys. Her background includes experience as a:
- Kindergarten through eighth grade classroom teacher
- Kindergarten through twelfth grade school principal
- College adjunct professor
- County coordinator
- Horizon Charter Schools’ administrator
Kathleen fills all family workshops with an abundance of engagement strategies, hands-on activities, and how-to-succeed tips. All of her workshops are designed to help parents and students flourish during their time homeschooling and beyond.

Free Workshops for Homeschool and Independent Study Parents and Students
Kathleen Waffle leads workshops for Horizon families on a regular basis at a variety of locations across Horizon’s six-county service area of Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado, Sutter, Nevada, and Yuba Counties. The workshops cover a broad range of topics important to homeschool and independent study families. There are never any charges for these workshops; they are a free service provided to Horizon families by Horizon Charter Schools.
