Horizon Class of 2020 Senior Spotlight
Since she was a young girl, Ahkeirah Jones has loved visiting her doctor. She enjoyed watching the medical assistants work and often asked them about it. Her curiosity gave her a behind-the-scenes look at what it was like to be a medical assistant. This fueled the Horizon Charter Schools graduate’s passion to follow a career in the medical field. Plus, helping people always makes her happy!
Ahkeirah knows reaching this goal won’t be easy, but she loves to push herself and is always looking for new goals to reach. After researching possible colleges, she decided the best way to achieve her goal was to participate in the Medical Assisting Certification program at MTI College in Sacramento.
“I always wanted to have something to do with the medical field, so naturally I looked at schools to help me reach that goal,” stated Ahkeirah. “MTI had a 100% pass rate for the CMA exams, and I thought that was amazing. Another thing that caught my attention was that their classes only reached up to 10 people because they want to be able to focus on the students.”
Horizon’s Many Class Options Help Ahkeirah Reach Her Goals
Small class sizes is one of the things Ahkeirah appreciated about high school days at Horizon Charter Schools. She participated in classes at the Roseville Learning Center with small groups of other Horizon high school students, and enjoyed the close knit, family feel. In addition to her classes at the Roseville Learning Center, Ahkeirah also attended classes online and with some of Horizon’s educational partners.
Two of her favorite distance learning classes at Horizon were Korean and Nutrition. She chose Korean because her family has a close friend who is Korean, and Ahkeirah wanted to learn to speak with her. Her passion to create and love of food led her to take the nutrition class. When she was young, she learned to cook with her grandmother. Ahkeirah good-naturedly admits she loves to eat way more than cooking, so she wanted to be sure she was making healthy choices.
“I really loved my foreign language and nutrition classes! I was really surprised — I wasn’t expecting the school to have those options” she said. “I love pushing myself to achieve new goals and those helped me to accomplish two I had really been wanting to do — learn a new language and form healthier eating habits for me and my family. I also loved my community service class because it took something I already loved doing and made it into a ‘class’.”
Horizon’s Community Service class promoted sharing positive and encouraging thoughts with many people in the community. “A lot of people hear negative things all the time, so I wanted to share positive things whether it be in day-to-day life, sharing scriptures, or just being a listening ear,” she added.
Lasting Friendships Formed Through Independent Study
To her surprise, another benefit Ahkeirah discovered through Horizon’s Independent Study program was the ability to form strong bonds with others.
“I was one of those people that thought I wasn’t going to have friends through school and independent study would be super anti-social, but I actually made some really nice friends that I still keep in touch with even after graduation,” she continued. “My favorite memory from Horizon is the close bonds I was able to build. I never felt alone or left out. I had close bonds with my teachers, which really helped me to feel comfortable enough to ask for help when I needed it.”
One of those close bonds the charter school graduate formed was with her supervising teacher (ST), Wendy Fayard. When asked about her ST, Ahkeirah exclaimed, “Ms. Fayard, if you see this, I love you!!!!!! She was by far the best teacher I have ever had in my life. She checked up on me to see if I needed anything. I mean she even knew my family, so yeah, she is amazing! Not enough words can say how helpful she was, especially how much patience she had, LOL.”
